Matthias Deger studied clarinet, church organ and singing in Linz. He also obtained Masters degrees in vocal ensemble studies and historical clarinets at the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
He now is active as a singer, clarinetist and composer alike. Baroque oratorios (from Carissimi to Bach) and Renaissance music form the stylistic focus of his vocal repertoire. As a soloist he performed with the baroque orchestra L'arpa festante München and sang the role of the Evangelist in Bach's Christmas Oratorio in the Philharmonie in Berlin. He also works with professional vocal ensembles such as La Pedrina, Thélème and La Cetra.
In his compositions and improvisations, he often plays with folk music content, takes up the modal tonal language of earlier times or other cultures and develops a simple, extended modal style.
Matthias Deger works also as a film music composer.
